Spreading Holiday Cheer: How Our Annual Picture Card Connects Family and Friends

When our mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, we started a new tradition: an annual holiday picture card. Christmas has always been her favorite holiday, so it felt fitting to celebrate each year with a snapshot of joy. What began as a way to help family and friends stay connected during the pandemic has become so much more—an unexpected source of laughter, connection, and conversation.

2021 CHRISTMAS CARD

Our first card went out in 2021, marking our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. We had a photo shoot complete with big “5” and “0” balloons. Our mom loved it, and watching her and our dad laugh as we tried to catch a photo with both their eyes open at the same time was a beautiful reminder that we were still in this together, celebrating each moment with joy and laughter.

That first card was a hit. My parents’ anniversary is in August, but we couldn’t celebrate with a big party because of the pandemic. So when the card arrived in December, friends and family were thrilled to see them celebrating such a milestone. Many called to wish them a happy anniversary and a Merry Christmas. It gave everyone a reason to reach out, to see our mom and the milestone—not just the diagnosis.

2022 CHRISTMAS CARD

In 2022, we captured another significant milestone: our mom’s 75th birthday. The card showed her celebrating life, and again, it helped friends and family feel connected. To give loved ones a deeper perspective, we included a message on the back listing all the activities she enjoyed throughout the year—from picnics to trips out of state.

By these, these holiday cards had become a tradition everyone eagerly looked forward to and a source of joy and connection for all of us.

2023 CHRISTMAS CARD

In 2023, we shared a collage of our mom’s adventures, showing her in different places and with other people—friends, extended family, and loved ones beyond just my dad, brother, and me.

The photos captured her embracing life, connecting with others, and savoring each moment. People loved seeing her “out in the wild,” living fully and vibrantly, as one friend put it.

Calls poured in, with friends eager to hear about her latest outings and experiences. The card sparked conversations that made Alzheimer’s feel less isolating and more like a journey we’re all part of, grounded in connection and joy.

Our advice? Pick a photo where your loved one looks most like themselves, and pick a moment that can spark conversation. We’ve learned how powerful it is to see those smiles captured and to know our story has become a favorite for our friends and family. It’s turned into a joyful memory we get to create with our mom each year, and it’s our way of sharing that “Alz Good”—even if things are changing.

We’re already working on the 2024 card, but we’ll keep the details a surprise until Christmas Day when we’ll share them on Instagram. The anticipation and excitement for the next card are palpable, and we can’t wait to share the surprise and delight of the reveal with our friends and family.
