Home Organizing for Independence: Using Technology and Thoughtful Planning to Aid Alzheimer’s Patients

Our journey with mom has been an inspiring one as we focus on what she can still do and adjust the world around her to enhance her independence. Here are some areas where we've found success:

Technology: Bridging the Gap with Smart Aids

  1. Google Nest Hub: A voice-activated tool that offers video calls, music, news, pictures, and automation tasks like turning on the TV. It's like having an extra pair of hands!
  2. Tile App: By attaching trackers to her wallet, purse, and remote control, the stress levels around the house have plummeted. Nothing has gone missing since.
  3. BroadLink RM4 Mini IR Universal Remote Control: A tool that allows us to change the TV channel remotely. It's a back-up we've only needed once, but it's comforting to know it's there.

Medicine: Ensuring Proper Dosage with Ease

  1. PillPack: An all-in-one solution for medication management.
  2. MMMS (MyMedSchedule) Plus: This medication adherence app, together with PillPack, has transformed our routine. We still remind mom at 9:00 am & 9:30 pm.

Dressing: Comfort and Style Combined

Shoes: With mom's intentional hand tremor, tying shoes became a challenge.

  • For Women: Stylish shoes that are easy to slip on.
  • For Men: Hands-free shoe brands like Kizik, offer great selections.

Organizing: A Personal Touch

  1. Closet: Seasonally-appropriate items are arranged, so there's no confusion.
  2. Dresser: Items are labeled and organized to help her see one item at a time.
  3. Make-up: With only one of each item, labeled with names and order in a caddy, mom's morning routine is smooth and enjoyable.

Conclusion: Our mission to foster independence doesn't have to be a complex one. It’s all about understanding, adapting, and organizing according to their needs. We hope that these tips, cultivated from our experience, help you and your loved one live a more harmonious life.
